If you’re familiar with the Thebe Magugu brand, then you’re likely well aware of their preference for very specific references and motifs in their designs. In this collection, the designer specifically makes reference to his family. Using a box of old family photos and help from his mother and aunt, the designer brings us a documentary-style collection that is full of style and fashionable looks, of course, but beyond that, you’ll also find this more personal element. For example, the blouses and pleated skirts make reference to his grandmother’s upbringing in the 1950s, while the mini skirts are a reference to his mother’s rebellious days in the 1970s. You’ll also find mutton sleeves, an ‘80s punk aesthetic, and even prints that actually feature images of the family. Pair all of this with what we’ve already come to expect of the Thebe Magugu brand—vibrant shades, flattering silhouettes, dramatic details—and we won’t be too surprised if the “Genealogy” collection quickly becomes a customer favorite.
