Though rebellious hair may seem par for the course these days (quarantine and clippers anyone?) back in 2013 it was much less so the case. As the story goes, Irene Kim who was a model at the time, got bored one day and began to dye her hair every color of the rainbow. The result of this simple action – this simple desire to break from the mundane and humdrum of every day life, was that she not only (unknowingly) coined the term “unicorn hair”, but she also started her very own hair trend, and as a result was instantly catapulted right into international stardom. Not a bad start, right?
But it wasn’t just a chance trend-setting moment that transformed Irene Kim into the fashion influencer and designer that she is today. No, you see, she had laid down the ground work long before that viral moment. Growing up a lover of all things fashion, Irene came of age with an eye for great clothing and a taste for style. Crediting both her mother and grandmother as her own real-life personal fashion influences, Irene would grow up to become an (accidental) fashion influencer herself. Raised in Seattle by South Korean parents and then relocating with them to South Korea when she was in junior high school, Irene continued to keep tabs on the world of fashion and informally studied the most prominent movers, shakers, and bloggers on the fashion scene –people like Susie Bubble, Bryanboy, and Chiara Ferragni to name a few. And a few years later when it was time to set off to college, Irene opted to study non other than textile design at New York City’s famed Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). She credits her move to New York city for ultimately giving her the confidence to later launch her own brand Ireneisgood, and as she returned to Seoul to begin a career in modeling and T.V presenting, she continued to pour energy into her brand, paving the way for the huge success that she and her brand have become today.
