The Viridi-anne

Tomoaki Okaniwa is a designer who graduated from the Fine Arts program at Tokyo Zokei University. He initially focused on oil painting before transitioning to garment design and establishing his menswear brand, The Viridi-anne, in Spring/Summer 2001. Okaniwa’s designs reflect a combination of modernity and tradition, as he incorporates advanced fabrics and avant-garde elements with classic silhouettes and traditional craftsmanship. His collection features asymmetrical separates, layered shorts, and distressed t-shirts, all inspired by the Japanese concept of ‘wabi-sabi’ that celebrates imperfection and the meticulous process of handcrafting each piece. The brand’s signature monochromatic color palette is evident in the supple leather jackets, oversized hoodies, draped pullovers, and bomber jackets, which exude a dark, urban vibe. Additionally, the collection includes blazers and knit cardigans that pay homage to timeless styles.
