Mr. Saturday

Designer Joey Gollish has explored the relationship between subcultures and conventional norms by drawing on the styles and symbols of past decades. With his brand, Mr. Saturday, he uses double entendres and postmodern pastiche to challenge classic designs and silhouettes. An ecru cardigan, for example, appears to be a symbol of American innocence, but upon closer inspection, the words ‘Good Luck’ knitted into the left breast create a sarcastic twist. Additionally, a muted knit crewneck with a Grim Reaper graphic is a reference to a subcultural pamphlet from the 1970s in New York. Other items like varsity bombers, hoodies, and faded denims feature iconography from the Mudd Club era. By combining nostalgia and modernity, Mr. Saturday’s irreverent aesthetic reveals the potential of the past to reshape our view of the present.
