At first glance, it looks like a classic, polished manicure. Look closer and you’ll spot the subtle trick behind it—the Italian manicure, the minimalist nail technique that’s taking over globally right now. The concept is simple: strategic polish placement creates the illusion of longer, slimmer nail beds without acrylics, extensions, or months of waiting for your nails to grow out. If your vibe is clean and understated, the Italian manicure is the nail moment you didn’t know you needed. It photographs well, works on any nail length, and looks expensive without being high maintenance about it. Here’s how to do it yourself in a few easy steps.
Prep
Preparation is everything with this manicure. Spend extra time cleaning up your cuticles before touching the polish – the illusion depends on it. Start by massaging a nourishing cuticle oil around each nail and let it sit for a few minutes to soften the skin. Gently push the cuticles back with a pusher tool, removing only any loose or excess skin if necessary. Once your nails are clean and dry, apply a thin layer of clear base coat to smooth the surface and help your polish last longer.
Italian Manicure
The magic of the Italian manicure is all about placement. Apply your chosen nail polish as close to the cuticle as possible without actually touching the skin. Repeat the same careful approach along both sidewalls of the nail, aiming for the cleanest application you can manage. Once the polish has dried slightly, dip a fine detailing brush into nail polish remover and carefully trace around the edges of the polish, removing the tiniest sliver of color from the perimeter. This barely noticeable border creates negative space around the polish, making the nail bed appear longer, narrower, and more elongated. Finish with a glossy top coat to seal everything in.
