Zendaya’s press tour looks for the new Spider-Man film have been impossible to ignore. Her thematic fashion moments, courtesy of stylist Law Roach, consistently dominate the conversation – but her beauty looks are just as worth talking about. Case in point: the dimensional smoky eye created by makeup artist Ernesto Casillas that’s been living rent-free in our heads. What makes this particular look work is its balance of warm and cool tones. Most smoky eyes lean one direction or the other, but this one sits right in the middle – sultry without being heavy, dramatic without losing wearability. It also happens to double as the perfect summer date-night makeup look, which is reason enough to learn how to recreate it. Here’s how.
Eyeshadow
This look is all about the shadows. Begin by applying a thin layer of concealer or eye primer across the lids to create an even base and enhance the longevity of the pigments. Ernesto Casillas shared that he used the Hung Vanngo Wonder Warm Eye Palette, but any palette featuring a mix of warm browns, taupes, and shimmering neutrals will work beautifully.
Sweep a warm cognac or caramel shade across the entire lid, blending it softly into the crease. Bring the same shade along the lower lash line. Next, deepen the look with a charcoal shadow, concentrating the color on the outer corner and diffusing it along the lower lash line and slightly into the inner corner. The key is blending. Continue softening the edges until the shadows appear seamless. To add dimension, press a shimmering gold or champagne shadow onto the center of the lid, then tap the same shade onto the inner corners and brow bone to catch the light. Build additional depth wherever needed until the eye feels as soft or dramatic as you prefer.
Finishing Touches
For extra definition, line the lower waterline with a dark brown pencil to intensify the eyes without overpowering the shadows. Curl the lashes and apply a wispy strip lash for a fluttery, elongated effect. Finish the lower lashes with black mascara or a handful of individual lash clusters. Complete the rest of your makeup as desired, then lock everything in with a long-wearing setting spray.
The final result of Zendaya’s romantic, multidimensional smokey eye is nothing short of show-stopping.
