Free People and Rusty are heading back to the early 2000s, when boardshorts sat low, rash guards counted as tops and surf labels travelled far beyond the beach. Their first collaboration delivers 12 limited-edition pieces rooted in Rusty’s Southern California history and Free People’s relaxed styling. The capsule arrives right as long swim shorts and technical surfwear are finding their way into everyday summer outfits again.
The Low Key Surf Suit leads the lineup in Atlas Red lightweight neoprene, with a fitted shape, crossed straps and full bottom coverage. The Turn It Up Long Board Shorts stretch toward a capri length with a floral print, while the Getaway Elastic Board Shorts use earth-toned nylon and a low-slung fit. A short-sleeved Vacay Rash Guard and After Sun Oversized Hoodie push Free People beyond its usual crochet-and-denim beach formula.
Tie-side bikini separates, another pair of long boardshorts and a dad cap round out the drop, but the longer shorts carry the clearest styling potential. Worn with a triangle bikini, fitted tank or oversized hoodie, they land somewhere between Y2K surf video and present-day street style.
