Summer has a way of pushing everything toward simplicity – outfits get easier, makeup gets lighter, and hair should follow the same logic. This season, ultra-sleek slick-backs and precision styling are taking a backseat to something altogether softer… Brushed-out curls. The look has an intentionally undone quality that feels perfectly suited to the season – airy and just a little wild in the best possible way. What makes it especially compelling is how it works with summer humidity instead of constantly fighting against it, which is a battle most of us have already lost anyway. The payoff is a cloud-like texture that reads as romantic without looking like you tried too hard. Here’s how to master it.
Straight Hair
If your hair is naturally straight, you’ll need to create the curl pattern before brushing it out. Start by applying a generous heat protectant from roots to ends. Then section your hair and create loose curls using either a large-barrel curling wand or oversized rollers. If you’re using a curling iron, pin each curl in place while it cools to help set the shape for longer-lasting volume.
Once every curl has completely cooled, remove the pins and resist the urge to leave them as-is. The signature finish comes from brushing them out. Using a wide-tooth comb or a soft bristle brush, gently work through the curls until they transform into soft, airy waves. Finish with a lightweight hairspray to preserve the volume and smooth down.
Textured Hair
If you already have natural waves or curls, you’re halfway there. Start with damp hair and apply a curl-defining cream to enhance your texture. Diffuse until your hair is fully dry, allowing the curls to set before touching them. Once everything has cooled, gently brush through the curls using a wide-tooth comb. The goal isn’t to eliminate the curl pattern but to loosen. If needed, smooth a drop of hair oil over the ends to tame any excess frizz.
Whether you’re creating curls from scratch or enhancing your natural texture, brushed-out curls are the kind of hairstyle that only gets better throughout the day.
