The first pass suggested a strict study in black. Chasuble dresses, square-shouldered sheaths, belted jumpsuits, capes and rounded evening shapes moved quickly through the church basement venue, keeping their metallic linings and embellished undersides mostly out of sight. Small flashes at the hems hinted that the severity was temporary, but the extent of the trick did not become clear until the models returned.

Two dressers in black bodysuits joined the action for the more involved changes. An austere wrapped dress was removed and reversed to reveal a silver draped design, while a square-shouldered sheath shifted into gold lamé. Other transformations required only a released panel or loosened fastening, allowing the models to handle the reveal themselves. The mechanics varied, but the setup remained consistent: the first look established one character, and the second promptly contradicted it.

That double identity connects neatly to the playful formality found throughout the Alexis Mabille lineup. The designer has long worked between traditional eveningwear codes and less expected proportions, but Fall 2026 turned that tension into a literal garment function.

A slightly boxy mini dress detached at the shoulders and dropped into a long sheath covered in silvery blue sequins. A flowing black coat opened to reveal a geometric embroidered lining and a fitted dress cut from the same decoration. Elsewhere, a bias-cut satin gown concealed mustard silk, black-and-gold lace effects and ruffles placed at the hips.

Color arrived as a reward for paying attention. Gold, silver, sapphire blue and saffron tones appeared beneath the black outer layers, changing the temperature of the runway in seconds. Mabille was not asking viewers to choose between a minimal black dress and a heavily decorated evening gown. He built both choices into the same piece.

The proposition was more technical than a simple reversible coat. Volumes had to survive being folded inward, embroidery needed to sit comfortably against the body, and ruffles had to disappear without ruining the first silhouette. Horsehair, bias binding and other details typically concealed inside a garment were left visible after the transformation, turning the supporting construction into graphic lines and surface decoration.

The presentation traded a conventional lineup for a live dressing demonstration. Assistants tugged, turned and refastened the more complicated pieces as the audience watched each garment move between states. That choreography could easily have overwhelmed the clothes, yet it also exposed how much engineering sat beneath the idea.

A full-skirted black design produced one of the biggest reversals when it turned inside out to reveal white tulle ruffles edged with black lace. The finale began as a rounded black pouf that surrounded the upper body, then opened into an embroidered bustier above tiers of white Chantilly lace. What first appeared closed, dark and imposing became airy, bridal and openly decorative.

The human work was a pointed contrast to the designer’s Spring Couture 2026 digital runway, where the collection appeared through AI-generated imagery on screens. Fall brought the audience back to seams, fastenings, linings and hands. The clothes were no longer an image of transformation. They had to complete it in real time.

Mabille built the collection around a familiar couture question: what happens when one client wants opulence and another wants the same design stripped back? His answer was to stop treating those preferences as separate orders. A single garment could arrive in black crêpe, then reverse into metallic shine, embroidery or lace without losing the line that connected the two versions.

The concept also gave traditional eveningwear a little more mischief. These were still formal gowns rooted in draping, satin, corsetry, lace and precise volume, yet their defining feature was the possibility of a mid-event switch. The wearer could enter in black and reveal the sequins later, or choose the embellished side first and save the severe version for another occasion.

That practical streak has appeared in Mabille’s work before, including the fabric manipulation and classic couture forms seen in his Spring 2025 couture collection. Fall 2026 pushed the idea further by refusing to settle on a final view. Every dress carried its own alternative, and every reveal made the first impression look deliberately incomplete.
