While contour and bronzer are staples of any full makeup beat, the usual goal is to blend them into the skin until they create barely-there definition. Greta Lee, however, is making a compelling case for doing the exact opposite. The actress is embracing dramatically sculpted cheekbones that are intentionally prominent. And instead of appearing harsh, the exaggerated contour feels editorial, especially against her soft, luminous skin. If you’re looking for a way to shake up your usual base routine, consider this your sign to let your cheekbones do the talking. Her makeup artist, Charlotte, shared some insight into the products and techniques behind the look, so we’re breaking down exactly how to recreate those sculpted cheekbones below.
Sculpted Cheekbones
Greta’s complexion starts with a soft-focus finish, so begin by smoothing on a hydrating primer. Next, mix a golden illuminator with your liquid foundation before applying it to the skin. This helps even out the complexion while adding a subtle, reflective quality. Use concealer to spot-treat any redness or darkness, blending thoroughly. Using a cool-toned contour stick, carve out the hollows of the cheeks, sweeping the product upward toward the temples. Continue the contour along the bridge of the nose and temples to create a cohesive, sculpted effect. Use a damp makeup sponge to blend. If you want an even more dramatic cheekbone, layer on additional contour until you achieve your desired depth. Once you’re happy with the sculpted effect, tap a soft blush onto the apples of the cheeks. Blend it upward so it follows the same trajectory as the contour, keeping the color slightly above the shadow.
Bright Eyes
You want the brows as natural-looking as possible, so fill in only where necessary. For the eyes, sweep a soft pearlescent ivory shadow across the lids, then add a touch of muted brown to the outer corners for subtle definition. Tightline the upper lash line before curling your lashes and applying mascara. The eye makeup is deliberately understated, allowing the sculpted cheekbones to remain the focal point.
