At Gucci’s show in Milan this Fashion Month, the brand debuted one of its most intense smokey eye looks yet. According to the brand, the entire collection, and its accompanying beauty looks, was meant to feel like a tangible expression of individuality, with every detail bold, dramatic, and unapologetic. Case in point is the smokey eye seen on models like Meredith Mickelson and Hyunjoo as they walked down the runway. While it’s certainly not your everyday makeup look, this moody, high-impact moment is perfect for anyone looking to channel a little couture drama on their next night out. There’s a fine line between intentionally grungy and accidentally looking like you haven’t slept in three days. Prep
As always, start with a thin layer of primer across the upper and lower lids, then set it with a neutral eyeshadow to create a smooth base that allows the following shadows to blend rather than stick. For this dramatic smokey eye, it helps to map out the shape before going in with the deeper shades. Using a pointed brush and matte gray eyeshadow, sweep the color through the crease and extend it slightly past the outer corner. Bring that same shadow underneath the eye, concentrating the pigment on the outer two-thirds for an elongated, sultry shape.
Intense Smokey Eye
Next, take a matte black eyeshadow and press it onto the lid, concentrating the deepest pigment along the lash line and outer corner. Blend the edges of the gray and black together until the colors melt seamlessly into one another. Run a clean cotton swab along the waterline to remove any excess product before lining it completely with black eyeliner. Then, smudge black shadow directly beneath the lower lash line to really amp up the drama.
For that unexpected pop of color, sparingly tap a dark blue or navy shimmer pigment onto the center of the lids and inner corners. Finish with plenty of black mascara, concentrating the product on the outer lashes for a lifted effect. Finally, clean up the area around the eyes with a small amount of concealer on a flat brush.
