The Vibe :

⊹ Romantic couture carrying considerably more physical and conceptual weight

⊹ Ethically sourced hair challenging fashion’s hierarchy of precious materials

⊹ Reclaimed egret feathers confronting the plume trade’s destructive history

⊹ Renaissance color and Roman references sharpened by plaster details

Aelis Fall 2026 couture kept Sofia Crociani’s translucent fabrics and romantic volumes, but the collection no longer seemed interested in floating above its subject. A reclaimed-feather cape opened the show with an imposing span, a cobalt velvet gown brought the weight of Renaissance portraiture, and the closing pink ballgown folded layers of tulle into firm, architectural ridges. The familiar delicacy was still present, though it now had something heavier to answer to.

That weight became literal in Crociani’s continuing work with the Grand Palais’ Atelier de Moulage. Fragments informed by the togas of Roman commanders appeared alongside draped duchesse satin, including a black-pigmented plaster piece fixed over one shoulder. Its concrete-like finish interrupted the polish of the satin rather than decorating it, making power look hard, uneven and slightly uncomfortable.

Human hair carried the collection’s more difficult question. Crociani used ethically sourced hair as embellishment while focusing on keratin, the protein shared by hair, wool, hooves, feathers and fur. Couture assigns radically different cultural and financial value to those materials, even when their biological relationship is close. Placing hair directly on the garments made that hierarchy visible without disguising the material as something prettier or more familiar.

The archival egret feathers on the opening cape extended the argument into fashion history. Their beauty came attached to the early 20th-century plume trade, which pushed the birds toward extinction in the pursuit of extravagant millinery. Crociani did not remove the glamour from the feathers. She made their history part of what the viewer had to confront.

Aelis has always asked more of an audience than a quick runway scroll can comfortably provide. Fall 2026 may still be photographed as velvet, tulle and dramatic volume, but its identity sits in the harder material questions underneath. The hair remained hair, the plaster looked like concrete, and the feathers arrived with a past that no amount of couture workmanship could erase.
