Not every makeup look calls for full-on blush blindness. And while a statement flush absolutely has its place, there are days when something softer and more diffused simply makes more sense. Blush tailoring, dubbed by makeup artist Rose Siard, is the technique that customizes your blush to better complement your complexion and the rest of your makeup – without requiring a drawer full of different shades for every occasion. Instead, it works with products you already own to create a color that melts seamlessly into the skin. The payoff is a naturally flushed complexion that feels less like makeup and more like your skin.

What Is Blush Tailoring?

As complexion-first makeup continues to dominate beauty trends (from Painted by Esther’s watercolor blush to Brontë blush), blush tailoring takes a more personalized approach. Rather than applying blush straight from the tube, you soften and customize the shade by mixing it with your complexion product. By blending a liquid blush with a bit of foundation, you create a toned-down version of the original color that’s naturally better suited to your skin tone. The cheeks appear more diffused and natural.

How to Apply It

Complete your usual complexion routine before reaching for blush. Once your base is blended, dispense a small amount of liquid blush onto the back of your hand or a mixing palette. Add a smaller amount of lightweight, sheer foundation and mix the two together until you reach your desired level of saturation. While concealers can work in a pinch, foundation is typically the better choice. Its thinner consistency blends more effortlessly with liquid blush.

Using a fluffy blush brush or makeup sponge, tap the customized color onto the cheeks, building the pigment gradually. Blend upward toward the temples for a lifted effect, then soften the edges until the color appears to melt into the complexion. You can wear your custom shade on its own for an understated flush or use it as a transition layer beneath your regular blush for added depth. Either way, blush tailoring delivers the kind of soft-focus, seamlessly blended finish that is complementary on all.
