The Vibe Is…
• A nostalgic yet rebellious take on femininity inspired by childhood memory
• Whimsical music and mischievous model attitudes sharpen the show’s mood
• London Fashion Week spotlighting Rocha as a central voice this season
Simone Rocha’s Spring 2026 collection, “Disgruntled Debutante,” feels like a diary entry turned into couture. Inspired by Maureen Freely’s 1992 essay, Rocha interprets the frustration and playfulness of a girl caught in her mother’s wardrobe. Presented at London’s Mansion House, the show was infused with mischief and nostalgia. Models walked with expressions that hovered between bored disinterest and sly amusement, set against a soundtrack that shifted from Doris Day melodies to the haunted echoes of witch house. The mood was equal parts sugary memory and shadowy afterthought, perfectly framing Rocha’s rebellious exploration of femininity.

This season Simone Rocha veered away from her signature ruffles and pearl-studded finery, instead presenting a sharper, pared-back vision. Sparkly bra tops were paired with hoop skirts, quilted jackets slipped over plastic raincoats, and bloomers peeked from beneath sheer dresses. Her fascination with volume re-emerged in the form of panniers and bustles, though softened with lighter fabrics in pastel shades. The effect evoked adolescent experimentation, as though the collection had been pieced together from stolen moments in a childhood bedroom mirror. These garments balance the innocence of make-believe dressing with an undertone of defiance, reminding us of how femininity often grows out of resistance rather than compliance.

Backstage, Rocha spoke of playing with her mother’s petticoats as a child, hoisting skirts high and twisting them into shapes her mother never intended. That personal recollection ran through the show, especially in the models’ defiant stances. Arms folded, gazes glazed with indifference, they embodied the “disgruntled debutante” spirit Rocha envisioned. Accessories reinforced this balance of beauty and discomfort: leather pillows edged in delicate broderie anglaise looked simultaneously soft and imposing. It was fashion as memory, fashion as rebellion, fashion as a love letter to all the girls who once felt stifled but found their way into self-expression anyway.
